Can Your Pet Catch a Cold?

You may have begun hearing the coughs, sneezes and sniffles that seem to sneak up on us every fall, from around the office, in the stores, or even in your own home. A lot of people often wonder whether their dogs and cats can catch common colds like humans do!

Pets get sick, too

Symptoms that resemble human colds in cats and dogs, like a runny nose, sneezing and coughing, are usually caused by a viral, bacterial or fungal infection in the canine or feline respiratory system, such as kennel cough. So while your pet is just as susceptible to illness as you, the viruses that affect pets don't affect humans and vice versa.

Protect your pet!

Traveling this season? Crowded, high-traffic conditions like on an airplane or at the vet, kennel or cattery are likely spots for germs and illness for pets, so while the holidays may seem like a long way off, boosting your pet’s immune system early on can help sustain wellness.

In addition, keep in mind if you’ll have house guests around- exposure to another family member’s pet, eating table scraps, or having your pet’s routine, comfortable living environment disturbed can cause stress and wreak havoc on an animal’s immune system.

Remember, taking a proactive approach to your pet’s health is just as important as it is for your own!
